Administrative Staff

Academic Administrator

Ginger Tarver Johnson (gjohnson@arvs.org) began her duties for the Arkansas Virtual School in December 2002 and is now in her 30th year of working with students and parents in the Arkansas public education system. In her career Ms. Johnson has served as a math teacher, computer programming teacher, guidance counselor, probation officer, curriculum specialist, and assistant junior high principal. She held the post of Assistant Director of Volunteers in Courts where she recruited and trained volunteer probation officers for first-time youthful offenders. She headed a team that established the first microcomputer lab in the Pine Bluff area at Dollarway High School. She taught continuing education computer literacy classes for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and served as a computer software consultant for the Center for Academic Excellence at UCA. Ms. Johnson served as district test coordinator and guidance counselor for the Searcy Public Schools and was the director of the CPEP (ACT tutoring program) project for the Searcy area through the Wilbur Mills Educational Cooperative. Through the Upward Bound program at ASU at Beebe, Ms. Johnson taught test-taking strategies to high school students. She taught night courses in math for Arkansas State University at Beebe and retired in June 2000 from Searcy Junior High where she had been the assistant principal. Ms. Johnson received a bachelor's degree in math from the University of Arkansas at Monticello, a master's degree in counseling and guidance from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and a specialist degree in school leadership and curriculum from the University of Central Arkansas.

Director of Special Services and Testing Coordinator

Dr. Gary Smith (gssmith@arvs.org) has been with ARVS for almost two years. He was previously the director of the Division of Exceptional Children for the Little Rock School District. Other experiences include classroom teacher for special education and general education, elementary principal, and state/national consultant. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Manager of Operations

Karen Ghidotti (kghidotti@arvs.org) has been with the Arkansas Virtual School since the second week the school was open in December 2002. She handles the logistical operations of the school and is responsible for Internet Service Provider (ISP) payments as well as the oversight and operation of the business and human resource side of the school, policy development, legislative issues, and grant writing. Ms. Ghidotti came to ARVS from a private foundation, but before that she spent more than five years with the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) where she was responsible for the management and oversight of state and federal grants that ADE gave to local school districts. She also applied for various state, federal, and private grants on behalf of the department. Over the next several months Ms. Ghidotti will be focused on legislative issues as ARVS looks forward toward developing a statewide charter school.

Director of Technology

Stan Boyd (sboyd@arvs.org) has been serving in the computer industry for more than 18 years. He began his computer experience in 1986 after joining the U.S. Air Force as a computer/electronics technician. Previously, Mr. Boyd served as the network systems administrator for the Arkansas Department of Education, where he managed a wide variety of server-based applications including Sametime Web-Collaboration, MS Exchange e-mail, McAfee Enterprise AV, and eTrust Intrusion Detection. Mr. Boyd has attended many certified training courses, including Microsoft MCSE NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000 Administration & Security, and IBM/Lotus Sametime Infrastructure Administration.

Administrative Assistant

Jennifer Victory (jvictory@arvs.org) became part of the ARVS team as the administrative assistant in January 2003. Her previous work experience includes six years as a professional child-care provider teaching pre-kindergarten students. In 1995 she made a career switch to bookkeeping with a strong emphasis in accounts payable.
